A pergola is an outdoor garden feature forming a shaded walkway, passageway, or sitting area. It is made of a horizontal lattice or frame, supported by pillars supported by climbing plants, such as vines, and can form a covered walkway. Pillars usually support transverse beams and a solid open lattice. Like the gazebo, it can serve as an extension of the building or as protection for the terraces. They differ from green tunnels, except that a green tunnel is a type of road under a tree canopy.
Pergolas are sometimes confused with „gazebos“ because the terms are used interchangeably. In general, the „gazebo“ is considered to be wooden benches with a roof, usually enclosed by lattice panels that form the frame for climbing plants. The pergola, on the other hand, is a much larger and more open structure. As a rule, the pergola does not include integrated seats.
Wood is the best materisl for making pergola, instead of brick or stone pillars, it is more affordable and increasingly popular. Wooden pergolas are made either from weather-resistant wood, such as western red cedar (Thuja plicata) or, rather, from coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens).
